ELIZABETH CARTER

INTEGRATIVE PSYCHOTHERAPIST/ COUNSELLOR, BSc, PGDip, PGCert, Dip Couns, MBACP

As a qualified psychotherapist, I integrate a person-centred approach with existential and psychodynamic methods to provide therapeutic support to individuals.

Working together to explore needs and issues through an informed process of reflection, self-development and change can support you towards finding an authentic way of living with deeper connections, healthier relationships and improved wellbeing. I offer a safe, empathetic and non-judgemental environment where you can talk freely and comfortably within a trusting therapeutic relationship.

A focus of my work is in supporting individuals who attended boarding school during their childhood. As an ex-boarder and former boarding school teacher, I am committed to helping others who have been affected by boarding school or those who want to develop a deeper understanding around their boarding school experience. Specialist support can help to identify and understand difficult feelings, unhelpful patterns of behaviour and relationship or family issues. Working towards developing a deeper sense of self and freedom of choice can feel liberating, improving psychological and emotional wellbeing. With specialised training in the Psychology of Addiction and Recovery from Stanford University, I offer evidence-based approaches to help individuals overcome the challenges of substance use, behavioural addictions and other issues associated with drugs and alcohol. Having worked within drugs and alcohol services, I have significant experience of working together to support mental health and wellness. I offer a compassionate and reflective journey of personal growth, internal connection and life meaning, where individuals can develop psychological tools to empower their development.

Mental wellbeing for children and young people:

Having previously worked as a teacher, a specialist in specific learning difficulties (dyslexia, ADHD, ASD), and as a mental health team member within schools, I have extensive experience of working with children and young people and the challenges they face in today’s society. Navigating life through childhood into adulthood can be difficult to cope with and dealing with issues at school or home can be an added pressure. Finding a safe therapeutic environment in which to talk and explore these issues can support individuals to develop deeper understanding and increased self-confidence.

I am experienced in supporting adults, children and young people, professionals and the LGBTQ+ community, providing therapy that can help with issues including stress, anxiety, depression, addiction, relationship problems, bereavement and loss, childhood and attachment, low self-esteem and anger management.
